To reply to Amanda’s tags: I think that what is happening in these scenes is the writers appealing to what they think is fanboys’ need for validation. I feel like this is what the media thinks that young men want to hear (whether that is true or not), that even if they are virgins (especially late-bloomers), they are naturally going to be endowed with god-like sexual skillz and even prostitutes will be all over them for free because they are sensitive/skilled/not like all the other guys.

I feel like there is a bit of a myth surrounding Game of Thrones, that it is a show “for guys” and particularly for fantasy nerds, which is categorically untrue and based more on critics’ own biases about genre fiction and who consumes it. I feel like this is an unfortunate moment where the writers kind of took that to heart, and tried to appeal to what they think is their core fanbase, while ignoring and insulting everyone else who watches the show.

A significant misstep, but I think I am willing to forgive them for it, for now.

Ok, I’m not sure, but I think this quote is only from the movie Troy, not from the Iliad. It certainly was not said by Achilles to Briseis, as she is only really mentioned indirectly in the first 50 or so lines of the poem. I also cannot decide if this is a sentiment that 8th century Greeks would have sympathized with, or if this is a more Classical Greek conception of the gods.

EDIT: Ok, I thought about this for a few minutes and actually have something to say. The article doesn’t really provide details, but I feel like this study (or their explanation of it) misunderstands the evidence surrounding the end of the Late Bronze Age. First, Mycenaean civilization spanned not only the whole Greek mainland, but also Crete and other islands in the Aegean. I have a hard time imagining how an earthquake could affect a cultural collapse in that whole area. Second, there does not seem to have been a sudden and violent collapse that would be the result of an earthquake. Even at Tiryns, the site they are ostensibly looking at, there is evidence of a destruction level dating to around 1200BC, but it was followed by a substantial reoccupation. I will accept that an earthquake could have led to a single destruction level at one palace, but not the collapse of the civilization as a whole.
